Tsuba

19th century

A round iron tsuba, forged in late Edo Japan, decorated with a "Chinese Landscape" scene that consists of a Chinese Scholar with an attendant, sharp mountains with a partially hidden pagoda, Mount Fuji hovering above in the clouds and a large lake with a boat in front of the mountain most likely Lake Biwa, a famous lake next to Mt. Fuji.

The tsuba, therefore, could potentially depict the story of the Chinese sage and alchemist Jofuku (Xu Fu), who was sent by the Chinese emperor to discover a mythical island with a mountain known as Mount Penglai or Hōrai said to hold the elixir of immortality. In Japanese tradition, Jofuku ends up finding the island of Japan insted and proclaims Mount Fuji as this legendary mountain. Mount Hōrai is a legendary, holy Chinese mountain in the Eastern Sea that in mythology is visited by hermits and is the home of the Eight Immortals. Legend has it that the Chinese Emperor sent Jofuku (Xu Fu) to find the elixir of Immortal Life on Mount Penglai, but had instead found Japan and that Mount Fuji was Mount Penglai.
