Quran Leaf
Iran
15th-16th century
An Illuminated Qur’an leaf containing verses from Sura Al-Mu'minun (The Believers) and the beginning of Al-Nur (The Light). It is written in beautiful Naskh script calligraphy, illuminated with gold, silver and polychrome borders and marginal roundels/medallions.
The heading leading into Sura Al-Nur on this leaf is written in white Naskh script on a gold ground cartouche with floral bud ornamentation. This type of marginal medallion is characteristic of the period. The margins have written commentary in red and black that is abruptly cut off suggesting that the manuscript was resized at some point to be bound in a smaller format.
