Poem by Oe no Chisato

Utagawa Kuniyoshi
ca. 1840-42

No. 23 from the series One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets depicting palanquin bearers returning home under a 22° halo moon while two dogs lay asleep in the foreground. A poem by Öe no Chisato (late 9th-early 10th century) appears in a cartouche on the top right of the print.

The poem can be deciphered as:

Autumn does not come for me alone among men yet I am burdened with a thousand vague sorrows when I gaze upon the moon.
