Turkish Woman (Donna Turca)

Cesare Vecellio, Christoph Krieger
1590

An illustration of a woman dressed in 16th century Turkish dress,  surrounded by a frame of Renaissance grotesques. She wears what is likely a velvet brocade dress with armpit holes through which her arms extend, causing her to bunch up its long-hanging sleeves as she carries them. She is adorned with a styled turban, earrings and a necklace. Additionally, she wears elevated wooden clogs known as "Nalin," worn to distance the wearer's foot from dirty water and slippery floors in bathhouses.

This work was published in the first edition of the book, "Degli habiti, antichi et moderni di diversi parti del mondo" (Of Costumes, Ancient and Modern, of Different Parts of the World).
