Mandolin

Greece
ca. 1900-1909

A finely carved mandolin with mother of pearl and abalone shell inlay decoration crafted by the instrument maker Ioannes. G. Stathopoulos (Ιωάννης Γ.Σταθόπουλος). The front of the Mandolin is decorated with an inlaid butterfly whilst the back has carved ribbing.

I. Stathopoulos', business not only produced stringed instruments but also wind and percussion instruments by 1909 when he passed on the family business to his son, Demetrius I. Stathopoulos (Δημήτριος Ι. Σταθόπουλος) (b. ca. 1877). In a newspaper article from the period, he is described as the instrument maker of the royal court.

The maker’s label is stuck inside the body of the instrument, showing the awards this maker received at the many exhibitions he showed his instruments (incl. Greece, Paris and Crete). Right underneath that, a stuck paper bears the name of A.G.Posporidis (Α.Γ.Ποσπορίδης) who repaired the instrument in 1945.
