Shabti Doll
Egypt
ca. 744 BC–656 BCE
A small worker shabti doll made of Nile clay. Originally, gesso would have been applied on the clay and it would have been a light blue colour. The brown clay figure is now glued on a wooden base.
The figure can be identified as a worker by its crossed arms and the tools held in each hand. Shabti dolls were the surrogate workers for the deceased in the afterlife and so boxes filled with these dolls would've been entombed with the dead along with other grave goods.
The piece most likely dates to the 25th Dynasty (ca. 744 BC–656 BCE) when shabti were mass-produced, becoming smaller and of lesser quality. However, they date even older from the 21st to 25th Dynasty (1000 to 750 BC).
