Cantonese Export Chess Pieces

China (Canton)
19th century

These Qing dynasty chess pieces represent two bishops in the form of Chinese government officials and a queen portrayed as an Empress in traditional Manchu attire. Such pieces would have played against red pieces, usually stained with cochineal, made in Canton (Guangzhou), as part of elaborate chess sets aimed at American and European markets. A missing element from these pieces is the intricate puzzle ball stands that would screw on their bases.
