Paper Icon Saint Spyridonas
Cyprus(?), Greece(?)
18th-early 19th century
An etching print of Saint Spyridon, bishop of Trimythus (c.270-348) on a throne, stuck on cypress wood with an added chased silver halo with floral decoration and a crown with cross, nailed around the saint's head.
Greek Orthodox paper icons like this one flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. These devotional prints were handed out by monasteries and usually depicted the monastery's patron saint, thaumaturgical icons, religious scenes and even views of the monasteries themselves. They functioned as mementoes/souvenirs for the faithful and as advertisements of sorts for the monastery, encouraging people to visit on a pilgrimage.
