Bronze Plaquette

Italy
16-17th century

An oval shaped bronze plaquette depicting the armoured personification of ‘Rome’. The figure holds up a winged victory playing a salphinx, with a depiction of Romulus and Remus suckling from their surrogate wolf mother beneath. “DAT AMORIS ET IUDICII SIGNUM” is inscribed around the image.

Plaquettes attained wide popularity during the Renaissance and were collectable artworks that harked back to classical motifs and stories. This plaquette has a hole that was added by a previous owner to hang and display the object.
