Faience Beaded Mummy Mask
Egypt
ca. 664-535 BCE
An ancient Egyptian beaded mummy mask, composed of small, flattened disc-shaped faience beads of various shades, re-strung into a similar configuration that they might have once had based on intact examples. Such beaded works would have been attached to the facial area of the Mummy as part of a larger beaded funeral net shroud.
In the Late Dynastic Period, it became the fashion for mummies to be adorned with a network of beads, attached to their wrappings. Most of these masks are theorised to depict the goddess Hathor.
