Sixteen Images Chion-In temple, Saikō

A Japanese hand-coloured albumen print photograph by Kusakabe Kimbei, Titled “Sixteen Images Chion-In temple, Saikō”. The photograph is mounted on card stock with a title in French underneath it and page number 173 written on the lower right. Cut out from an album aimed to be sold to European Tourists, the image has been coloured with the use of traditional Japanese watercolours. Of special note is the preservation of the very fugitive bright red pigment often referred to as sunrise red.
