Group of Three Peruvian Funerary Dolls

Peru
Assembled: 20th century
Textiles: 500-1470

A trio of Peruvian dolls from South America, made from pre-Columbian textiles attached to a square cushion made from cotton and wood. The dolls are stuffed with a variety of plant and animal fibres and wrapped with patterned textiles. It is likely that these dolls were once hung in a house from the addition of a strap attached to the back of the cushion.

Dolls of this type were made by Peruvian women during the first half of the 20th century using scraps of ancient textiles of the pre-Inca Wari (500-1000) and Chancey (1000-1470) culture sourced from already disturbed burial sites.
