The Noblewoman Taira no Tokuko (Kenreimon-in)

Utagawa Hiroshige
ca. 1845-48

The waka poem, Kenreimon'in, by Chûnagon Atsutada (Fujiwara no Atsutada (906-943)) depicted in this work is No. 43 in the series Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets (Ogura nazorae hyakunin isshu).

The print is divided into two sections: It features a calligraphic waka poem by Atsutada on top, and a scene depicting Taira no Tokuko (Kenreimon-in) (born 1157), a historical noblewoman and waka poet at the bottom. The image shows her taking Buddhist vows after her lover, Taira no Sukemori, was killed in the battle of Dan-no-ura (1185).
