The Syllable No: Hayano Wasuke Fujiwara no Tsunenari
Utagawa Yoshitora
1864
A portrait of one of the famous 47 ronin being hit with a snowball. Each part of the set is linked to a kana syllable and is arranged accordingly. Thus this print is paired with the kana syllable “の”(No). The lively designs from this set show the ronin during the night attack at Moronao's mansion, fending off attackers, and searching for enemies. Each samurai wears the ronin's trademark black and white dogtooth bordered robe. Armour and clothing are carefully detailed, and the faces are expressively rendered. From the series “The Story of the Faithful Samurai in The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers”.
