Silver Dinar of Jalayirid Sultan Husayn I
Iran
1377-81
A silver dinar from the reign of the Jalay'irid Ruler Husayn I (Shaikh Hussain Jalayir) (Died 1382). Although some of the text on this hammered coin is illegible due to a misstrike that left the design off-centre, other examples of this coin help us fill in the missing blanks. The obverse features a quatrefoil design with Arabic text in its centre stating the Islamic creed of faith known as the 'Shahada': "No god but God, Muhammad, is the messenger of God". Each petal of the quatrefoil bears the names of the four Rightly guided Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali). On the reverse, the coin has an intricate five-veined figure centred around a pentagon within which is a six-pointed star. Distributed in and around this figure are texts referring to the reigning sultan and the year of minting.
The Jalayirid dynasty (1335-1432) was the most important successor to the former Ilkhanid Empire (1256-1335) bringing Iraq, Azerbaijan and many provinces of Iran under their control.
