Antiphonal Manuscript Fragment

Spain
16th century

A cut fragment from a painted antiphonal manuscript leaf with elaborate initials. The manuscripts hold square notation on five-lined staffs, annotated underneath with lyrics in Latin in black and red rubrics along with Large initials done in red and blue.

Antiphonaries were books used by a church choir during services with the pages of these books being massive so the music could be easily read by the whole choir.

The fragment, along with a similar fragment (Accession No. 2022.023) that most definitely comes from the same codex, where found in the back of a frame, acting as a baking. The repurposing of old vellum manuscripts became a common practice after the rise of printed books.
