Night View at Ryogoku Bridge

Utagawa Kunisada
ca. 1820s-1860s

The left panel from a woodblock print triptych depicting crowds of people enjoying the firework display for the Kawabiraki (Opening the River) ceremony on the Ryōgoku bridge.

The celebration was held annually at the beginning of Summertime, during which the city folk of Edo would enjoy the cool evening in a custom called 'yusuzumi' and socialise whilst the Sumida River was packed with pleasure boats, floating restaurants, tea houses, bars and other businesses.
