Cypriot fossils

Cornelis de Bruyn
1698

An etching depicting Cypriot fossilised bones protruding from their host rocks from the book Voyage to the Levan.

The fossils depicted are likely those of the Pygmy hippopotamus and elephants that once roamed the island of Cyprus before being hunted to extinction during prehistoric times.

Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/7) was a Dutch artist and traveller who completed two large tours and published illustrated books with his observations of the people, architecture, flora and fauna he experienced.
