Beauty Preparing for Slumber
Utagawa Kunisada III
ca. 1858-1872
As the hot air rises on a summer night, a woman dressed in a short-sleeved yukata (cotton robe) with a floral pattern and a red inner lining, crawls under a mosquito net to sleep. An uchiwa (non-folding) fan with a spring plum blossom design is held in one hand while the other raises the net.
The painting composition appears to be based on Utagawa Toyokuni's (1769-1825) early 19th-century print design, 'Wild Geese Landing at Iakimasuya' from the print series 'Eight Famous Clothing Merchants'.
During the period 1858-1864, Hosai studied under Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1864), and Kunisada II (1828-1880). Between these dates he assumed multiple names with multiple variations, making it difficult to date this scroll. There is calligraphy on the back of the work referring to Tanaka Castle in Japan as the site where this painting was once located. Assumably, it was commissioned for the tea ceremony room by a wealthy castle patron, but this is just speculation. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Tanaka Castle was declassified for fuedal use in 1872.
