One Hundred Pictures by Kyôsai
Kawanabe Kyosai
1880s (originally ca. 1863-1866)
An accordion album containing fifty prints by the ‘demon painter’ Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), from his series One Hundred Pictures by Kyōsai (Kyōsai Hyakuzu 狂斎百図). The full series consists of 200+ comic illustrations depicting Japanese legends, proverbs and folklore. These small prints were published in single sheet format and sold in ten print packages from around 1863 to 1866 by the publisher Wakasaya. In the 1880s the publisher Ōkura Magobei reprinted the set in a bound book/album format, like the one in the Kentoni collection.
Although the album shows both Wakasaya publisher seals and censorship seals from the 1860s, the format tells us this is an 1880s printing by Kura Magobei, who used a combination of original and new woodblocks.
