The Courtesan Takao II
Utagawa Hiroshige
ca. 1845-48
Depicting a poem by Sugawara Michizane: Takao, from the series Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets (Ogura nazorae hyakunin isshu).
The courtesan Takao of the mid-1650s, who is depicted wearing an autumn maple leaf-patterned kimono, was renowned for being skilled at seducing wealthy and powerful patrons. She was bought out of brothel life by Date Tsunamune (1640-1711), the daimy of Sendai.
The poem can be deciphered as follows:
At the present time,
Since I could bring no offering,
See Mount Tamuke!
Here are brocades of red leaves,
As a tribute to the gods.
