Memorial Portrait of Ito Zenhei

Kojima Sakon
1843 (Tempo 14)

A Japanese memorial portrait painting of the samurai Ito Zenhei. The painting shows the sitter alongside his swords as he sits on his knees dressed in a formal kamishimo. A text block hangs above the painting of the late samurai talking about the sitter’s life. To the left of this text block is Ito Zenhei's death poem.

The sitter’s name along with the family crest of a Mokko in Hut (flower in a house) shown on his kamishimo, identifies him as part of a branch of the Ito Clan.
