Portrait of an Ashigaru

Japan
1860s

A glass negative photograph showing an armoured Ashigaru holding a spear. Ashigaru were foot soldiers employed by the samurai class. The crest on his greaves identifies the foot soldier as part of the Tokugawa's forces during the Boshin War (1868-1869). The crest has been overpainted on the glass negative to appear more legible when the photograph is printed.
