Beauties Holding Hands
Japan
18th-early 19th century
A painting depicting two women making their way along a hillside path whilst holding hands.
The mounting on the scroll is made up of textile scraps originating from two embroidered kimonos dating to the late 1700s. We see dyed and embroidered peonies on a cream monochrome damask-type silk weave showing a fine pattern of flowers and saya-gata (swastica). The textile on the top of the scroll depicts a cluster of chrysanthemums, ominaeshi(?) and miscanthus while the bottom shows a cluster of bush-clover, miscanthus and ominaeshi(?). Both the blue top and bottom panels are executed through yūzen dyed and embroidered tsumugi plain weave silk.
