Beauty Under Moonlight
Utagawa Kuniyasu
ca. 1811-15
In a lime green kimono with a bat pattern at the hem, a courtesan adorned in a tortoiseshell comb and kanzashi, holds a roll of kaishi paper on a veranda. She appears entranced by the beauty of the rising moon against the backdrop of vast mountain ranges and pine forest.
The subject matter is likely a reference to the poem, Evergreens on the Mountain (Maki tatsu yama) by Jakuren Hôshi (1139–1202), which is one of theThree Evening Poems (Sanseki no uchi).
Poem:
Sabishisa wa
