Standing Beauty
Utagawa Kunitame
ca. 1818-30
A student of Toyokuni I (1769-1825), this painting by Kunitame features his master's signature elongated face and slim slanted eyes. The work depicts a fashinable upper class lady of Edo dressed in a furisode (振袖), a long sleeved kimono, with embroidered Hō-ō birds and Japanese maple leaves on a green net-patterned background. A geometric orange obi is tied around her waist, completing the outfit.
