Standing Courtesan

Utagawa Yoshihide
ca. 1848-50s

Garbed in a blue shima (striped) kimono with a brown obi embossed with ospacious symbols, this standing courtesan painting is by Utagawa Yoshihide, a disciple of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861). The woman has a pleasant expression with a slightly open mouth, appearing mid-conversation. With layers of kimono covering her hands, she lifts her obi as if undressing for someone.

The woman's face and figure heavily resemble the work of Yoshihide's master, and is even stamped with the 'Yoshi Kiri' seal typically used by Kuniyoshi and his students.
