Lacquer on Tortoiseshell Sake Cup

Japan
19th century

A sakazuki-type sake cup made from tortoiseshell and decorated with depictions of summer insects executed in taka-maki-e technique (raised relief) lacquer. The cup is missing its foot.

The insects consist of a butterfly, hornet, grasshopper, cicada, cricket and dragonfly.

Marks on the object reveal that it has been exposed to hot oil or fire in the past, damaging the sensitive tortoiseshell.
