Cupid and Death
Bernard Picart
1719
A print by Bernard Picart of a scene based on one of Aesop's fables with the same name, Cupid and Death from the book, Fables Nouvelles (New Fables) by Antoine Houdar de La Motte. In this story, God's Cupid and Death accidentally swap arrows resulting in chaos visible in the etching's background. Bellow an elderly man flits with a young woman, a pile of dead potential lovers, new couples and a funeral procession can be seen as the two deities fly above with their bows drawn with Zeus looking down from the clouds.
