View of Nihonbashi Tori-itchome
Utagawa Hiroshige
1858
A luxury printing of View of Nihonbashi Tori-itchome, No. 44 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei).
During a hot summer's day in Edo's (Tokyo) Nihonbashi district, people shelter under parasols and straw hats. The busy main street is dominated by Sumiyoshi dancers (street performers) who parade away under a massive two-tiered two-coloured parasol topped with a gohei (Shintō ritual wand). Following close behind is a female street minstrel of the Hinni (outcast) class known as an onna-dayu, who would sing while playing the shamisen.
