Ca Mau Blue and White Porcelain Saucer
China
ca. 1725
A ribbed porcelain saucer, hand painted with a central medallion showing a bird in an open garden observing a flying insect. At the rim are four extended flowers, which divide four panels with scenes of flowers growing out of rocks. The base of the saucer is decorated with two flowering branches.
The object was a part of the merchandise discovered onboard the Ca Mau Shipwreck in the South China Sea. The Chinese junk ship was on route from Canton (Guangzhou) to the Dutch trading port of Batavia (Jakarta), before catching fire and sinking.
