Geisha Shielding Face
Utagawa Kuniyasu
ca. 1820-32
A geisha looks upward while covering her face from the dark storm clouds above. In stride, the woman's posture and sandaled feet suggest that she is en-route to an engagement with customers. She grasps the ends of her kimono revealing a lining decorated with pond weeds. Her fashionable plaid-patterned obi is embroidered with a gold floral design. Plaid patterns were trendy in Edo Japan and were used for both men's and women's clothing.
The geisha has a wad of kaishi paper wrapped around her lacquered hand mirror, gently tucked inside the front of her obi and a folding fan for performing at the back. The towel draped over her shoulder bears a crest of seven primrose blossoms used by the Tomimoto school of chanting.
