Woman's Embroidered Sleeve Bands
China
19th century
A pair of Qing dynasty women's embroidered sleeve bands depicting pictorial scenes on a white monochrome damask-style silk weave.
The left band panel shows a garden scene with a woman holding a fan and a man holding an umbrella under a pagoda. Peonies and a willow tree grow from rocks scattered around the scene. Blooming plum trees and a red sun are embroidered in the right corner, with tree and mountain peaks breaching the mist at the top of the panel.
The right band panel shows a 'heavenly scene' with a woman holding a sword and a girl dressed as a red-crowned crane performing a dance with swords. Both stand on clouds. Chrysanthemums and Asian pine grow from rocks at the bottom of the scene whilst the top shows a similar depiction of tree peaks and mountain peaks breaching the mist, blooming plum trees and red sun.
