Enoshima

Kusakabe Kimbei(?)
ca. 1870s-1900s

A Japanese hand-coloured albumen print photograph titled "Yenoshima". The photograph shows two clam collectors on the beach looking out at Enoshima Island near Yokahama during low tide when the island is accessible by a land pathway.

The island of Enoshima has been a popular pilgrimage/travel site since ancient times, as the island is dedicated to the Japanese Buddhist goddess Benzaitan.
