A Picture of Chrysanthemum Near The Fence
Ji Lao Au Kai Fan(?)
1907
A late Qing dynasty ink and colour painting depicting yellow chrysanthemums next to a bamboo lattice and wicker fence. The work comes from a painting album made in the British colony of Hong Kong.
In 1898, the colony of Hong Kong was expanded and controlled by the British, which resulted in its inhabitants being completely cut off from mainland China, under the rule of the Qing dynasty. The poem and image appear to express the maker's resentment toward the period's new status quo.
