Export Brooch with Jadeite Bat and Coins
China
Jadeite Carving: 19th century (Qing dynasty)
Setting: ca.1912-49 (Republic period)
A hand-carved moss on snow jadeite in the shape of a bat and two coins set in a silver filigree brooch decorated with a repeating pattern or coins and enamelled four-petaled flowers (frame hallmarked SILVER). In China, both bats and coins are considered auspicious symbols that bring good fortune and prosperity.
The jadeite stone was originally set into traditional Qing dynasty hair ornament jewellery but was re-purposed into its current brooch setting to be sold in the Western market during the Republic period of China.
