Okin at the Shubi no Matsu
Utagawa Kunisada II
1863
From the series, An Assortment of Beauties in Modern Style, published by Daikokuya Heikichi.
The geisha Okin casually gazes up at the full moon, shielding her eyes with a bundle of kaishi paper in her hand. She leans on the roof of a pleasure boat dressed in a bi-coloured kimono that transitions from burgundy to Prussian blue, rendered through the use of a bokashi technique. Her kimono robe is further ornamented with a butterfly family crest and bat design along the bottom hem. The design is accentuated by an elaborate obi belt, decorated with stylised rosette medallions over a ground of green diapering.
The Shubi no Matsu was a landmark tree that served as a waypoint for those travelling by boat to and from the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
