Hookah Water-Pipe Bowl
Iran
19th century
A Qajar water-pipe (hookah) bowl crafted from metal and multicoloured enamel. It depicts three standing quatrefoils with a petal-shaped top foil, within which enamel bust portraits of two men and a woman are painted. Two of the figures appear in European attire, with Western-style white cravats and collars. The portrait of the woman is damaged, with significant portions of the enamel missing from the bowl.
The space surrounding the quatrefoils is decorated with metal floral arabesques and enamelled blooming rosettes against a blue background. Bands of repeating turquoise rectangles appear on the bowl's base and below its lip. A secondary row of repeating turquoise heart-shaped petals embellishes the lower band.
