Export Blue and White Soup Bowl

China

late 18th-early 19th century

This blue and white porcelain soup bowl was produced in China for export in the late 18th to early 19th century. The design, painted in cobalt blue under a clear glaze, shows a sailboat on an inland body of water passing a pagoda, with two birds flying overhead. Porcelain wares of this type were traded in large quantities to Europe, where they were used as tableware and collected as imported goods.
