The Actor Iwai Hanshiro V in the Role of Mikazuki Osen
Utagawa Kunisada
1810
In this sekiga painting, Kunisada depicts the actor Iwai Hanshirō V as Mikazuki Osen (三ヶ月おせん) in the play Shitennō Yagura no Ishizue (四天王櫓礎) which was performed at the Ichimura Theatre on 29th November 1810 in Ichimura province. According to Dr Horst Graebner (Kunisada Project), the work was most likely produced during a shogakai (drawing party) for the premiere of the production. Above the painting is inscribed a poem by the writer Ota Nanpo (-1823) who was a popular author and collaborated with many ukiyo-e artists on paintings during this period.
The poem can be read as:
雨けたをちらりとみせて、かくすことなき、
夫はこんや乃みか月おせん
Amageta wo chirari to misete, kakusu koto naki,
sore wa konya no Mikazuki Osen
Glancing at the rain clogs, there is nothing to hide,
she is tonight's Mikazuki Osen
