Silk Purse
China
Embroidered textile: 19th century
Bag shape: ca. 1912-49
A silk purse pouch made from repurposed embroidered Qing dynasty sleeve bands.
The two silk matching embroidered panels that make up this purse would have originally been on the ends of a Qing dynasty Chinese woman's robe sleeves. One side of the pouch shows a mirrored scene of a Taoist immortal riding a dragon-fish emerging from waves, whilst the back shows a mirrored scene of a female Taoist immortal standing on clouds and holding a child.
This purse would have had a metal clasp and been used as a European clutch bag.
