Mandarin's Winter Court Hat
China
ca. 1875-1912
During the Qing dynasty, regulations dictated court dress for both the imperial family and government officials, serving to set them apart from the general public. An important element of this formal attire was the distinctive hats worn. Known as a nuanmao (暖帽: warm hat), this particular hat was worn by Mandarin officials during the winter months. Paired with a finial (Accession no. 2021.017), which signified the wearer's rank, this hat was crafted from velvet and satin, with red silk tassels draping from the finial to cover the crown. During formal court ceremonies held by the Emperor, the finial would be prominently displayed. However, for less formal occasions or daily duties, officials would have to change the tops on the hat.
