Courtesan Nighttime Cherry Blossom Viewing

Utagawa Kunisada
1858

Three courtesan, Wakamurasaki of the Tamaya (L), Takigawa of the Kukimanji (C), and Izumiyama of the Izumiya brothels (R), are accompanied by their kamuro at a yozakura (a nighttime cherry blossom viewing event) in the Yoshiwara. As courtesans were not permitted to leave the red light districts, special gatherings were organised within the walled communes to celebrate the changing seasons.
