The Eternal, Inexhaustible and Complete Storehouse for Occasional Use of Great Japan (Dai Nihon Eitai Setsuyo Mujinzo), Vol 2
Kawabe Sōyō (Author/Compiler), Matsukawa Hanzan (Illustrator)
ca. 1864
The Eternal, Inexhaustible and Complete Storehouse for Occasional Use of Great Japan (Dai Nihon Eitai Setsuyo Mujinzo) was one of the most common Japanese-Kanji-word dictionaries and household encyclopaedias of the 19th century. Originally compiled by Kawabe Sōyō and first published in 1750, the text was later revised and expanded by Hori Gennyūsai and Hori Genpo in 1831, with subsequent reissued in 1849 and 1864. This example comes from the 1864 version.
The encyclopaedia offers insights into the subjects of language, poetry, history, the four seasons and calendrical charts, but also includes information on Omnyōdō (the way of Yin and Yang) with topics such as auspicious and inauspicious days, astrology, divination and palmistry. While predominantly text-based, the book features scattered illustrations throughout.
