Shagreen Spectacles Case

China
ca. 1800-1912

A spectacles case wrapped with shagreen (shark skin). Spectacles were only affordable to the wealthy and powerful in Qing dynasty China as they were made with expensive materials such as the green-dyed shark skin. These cases would have been worn suspended from one's belt.

This work is accompanied with rock crystal lens spectacles (Accession no. 2024.018).
