Portable Watercolour Paint Box
James Newman Co.
ca. 1807-1830s
A small portable wooden watercolour paint box with a sliding lid that opens to reveal twelve divided compartments holding watercolour cakes (watercolour blocks). It has an elongated compartment which houses a brush and a mechanical pencil, potentially added at a later date. While the brush is not contemporary, the brass mechanical pencil with a twisting barrel likely dates back to the 19th century.
