Sodenashi (Vest) with Magpies and Flowers
Japan
Embroidered Textile: ca. 1800-1850
Vest shape: ca. 1880-1912
This vest is crafted from joined pieces of cotton and silk, with side straps connecting the front and back panels. The fabric used for both panels features hand-embroidered azure-winged magpies, known as 尾長 ("onaga") in Japanese, which translates as "long tail". In Mandarin, the word for magpie is 喜鵲 ("xǐque"), which includes a character meaning "joyful", reflecting the belief that these birds bring good fortune. The fabric likely originates from a kosode, a style of kimono traditionally worn by young unmarried women.
