Courtesan on Promenade

Takamichi
19th century

With bamboo blinds and hollyhock sprigs decorating her obi and large fans with hanging tassels attached to her uchikake, this courtesan, on an outing along the streets of Edo, evokes the courtly romances of Heian period Japan (794-1185).

This work follows the style of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) during the use of his art name Sori (between 1794-1798). It is likely that this painter was one of his many minor students or a follower of his work.
