Wisteria at Kameido Tokyo

Kusakabe Kimbei
ca. 1870s-1900s

A Japanese hand-coloured albumen print photograph titled "Wisteria at Kameido, Tokyo". The photograph shows the banks of a pond at the Kameido Tenjin shrine gardens with canopies of Wisterias in full bloom. Visitors are shown standing on the oposite banks and on a drum bridge which is reflected in the still waters of the pond below.

This image of wisteria in full bloom at a Tokyo shrine follows a well-known 1856 woodblock print by Hiroshige from the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".

Kameido Tenjin shrine was ultimately destroyed during World War II and has since been rebuilt with modern materials. This photograph thus offers a glimpse into the now altered famous view.
