Meisen Kimono with Geometric Pattern and Stripes
Japan
ca. 1940-55
During the first half of the 20th century, textile workshop production was ramped up by Japanese department stores to address the growing demand for wider fashion tastes of Westernised Japan. Cost-effective kimonos made from meisen, a more durable and somewhat stiff silk, were mass-produced and designed to be visually striking to consumers through the use of vivid colours and bold patterns.
